FORT POLK, La. - Combat and small group advisors from 1st Battalion, 353rd
Regiment, 162nd Infantry Brigade, took a break from training to play
ultimate football.
The sport mixes a football with the rules of ultimate Frisbee. Four teams
from the battalion took the field to see which would be victorious. Teams
were mixed, with each having members from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
“The idea for the event was to get everyone to bond and have a good time,”
said 2nd Lt. Paul Wade, Alpha Company executive officer. “I really think
the services have a collegial rivalry, and sometimes that can be an
impediment to working together. Sports are a good way to make people work
as a team. We hope this translates to some good work in the classroom and
downrange," he said.
Members of combat advisor class 86 have some tremendous pressure put on
them. Many will deploy overseas as soon as this class is finished.
Ultimate football was the chance to get a break from language class and
other training.
“We take training seriously, but we can still have fun,” said Sgt. 1st
Class Shawn Davis, battalion signal officer.
The winners of the game received no prizes, but there was definitely pride
at stake. As the referees counted down the final seconds the play got
intense as each of the finals teams tried to score to win the game. As the
whistle blew and the games concluded, the 1st Battalion, 353rd Regiment
had formed a new sense of camaraderie with its sister services.
